Understanding Severe Chronic Pain

Pain is the body's normal response to injury. It's a protective function that triggers the body's natural healing process once pain signals travel from the source of pain through the spine and to the brain.

As the injury heals, the pain we feel usually eases. Chronic pain, however, causes ongoing physical distress that:

  • persists for a long time (more than six months)
  • is hard to relieve or manage
For patients and their families, the impact of severe chronic pain is profound - preventing patients from living productive and rewarding lives. It also can lead to significant emotional, economic, and social stress. This is especially true when chronic pain is not treated adequately.

Not all pain is the same. Knowing which type of pain you are experiencing is important because not all therapies work well for all types of pain.

PRIALT may be right for many types of pain, including:

  • Pain associated with failed back surgery
  • Cancer-related pain
  • HIV and Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related pain

Pain caused by these conditions is often either nociceptive or neuropathic in origin:
  • Nociceptive pain is caused by tissue damage. It's often described as a throbbing or aching pain, and tends to respond well to standard opioid therapy, such as morphine.

  • Neuropathic pain is caused by nerve damage or dysfunction in the nervous system. It's often described as a burning pain, and doesn't always respond to standard opioid treatments.
